  1. Make sure the building is off-limits to trespassers and that the locks are intact.

All tenants should comply with access rules to ensure safety housing quality and protect landlords’ and residents’ property. Make sure all entrance locks work well.

  1. Check to see whether hallways, public spaces and surrounding parking areas are safely illuminated

The building and parking should be well-lit to ensure safety at all hours.

  1. Check to see whether fire extinguishers are functioning

Each floor should be equipped with at least one fire extinguisher, shielded from direct sunlight. Check to make sure the pressure is in the green zone. It should be replaced the extinguisher (powder) every three years by regulations.

  1. Inspect water heater to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning and electrocution risks

Gas-powered water heaters should be installed outdoors. If installed indoors, make sure an automatic air vent is in place.

Electric water heaters: Make sure circuit breakers are in place to prevent electrocution.

  1. Make sure the building is equipped with fire alarms

One fire alarm per floor is required, but another alarm in your room is advised.

  1. Make sure emergency exits are accessible

The exits should not be used as a storage area. Multiple emergency exits are required.

  1. Know what to do in emergency situations

Keep at hand a copy of the layout of the building and hold drills to ensure swift evacuation. Keep in mind the location of exits and steps to take in case of emergencies.
