Taipei Medical University (TMU) hosted the 2025 International Joint Symposium: Precision Health – Leading the Future on September 11, a landmark event that brought together nearly 300 participants from 21 countries across Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas to explore the future of precision healthcare.

The symposium was organized by TMU’s Office of Global Engagement, with support from the university’s six colleges: Medicine, Oral Medicine, Pharmacy, Humanities & Social Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, and Nutrition. Over the course of the day, internationally renowned experts from institutions including Tohoku University in Japan, the Texas Heart Institute in the United States, the University of Cagliari in Italy, and the University of Lille in France delivered keynote lectures and engaged in in-depth panel discussions.

Opening Remarks by Chairman Ray-Jade Chen, Board of Trustees, TMU, and President Teiji Tominaga, Tohoku University, Japan.

The morning session focused on groundbreaking advances in translational medicine, highlighting topics such as AI-driven diagnostics, biomarker discovery, regenerative medicine, and next-generation drug development. Presentations emphasized how precision health is transforming traditional models of care, shifting from treatment-focused approaches toward more predictive, preventive, and personalized strategies.

In the afternoon, participants joined two thematic breakout sessions designed to deepen collaborative dialogue. The first explored international experiences in sustainable health policies and their domestic applications, offering comparative perspectives on policy frameworks that can enable precision health to be implemented at scale. The second focused on gastroenterology research, showcasing emerging collaborations and translational projects that connect basic science with clinical application.

Speaking at the symposium, organizers underscored the importance of international collaboration in tackling pressing health challenges. With populations worldwide facing the dual burdens of aging and chronic disease, as well as the persistent threat of emerging infectious conditions, precision health offers pathways to more effective, patient-centered care. By convening experts across disciplines and national boundaries, the symposium sought to accelerate the translation of innovation from the laboratory to the clinic.

Taking the opportunity during this symposium, the presidents of TMU and Tohoku University held a closed-door meeting to review the progress of ongoing collaborations and to outline future directions for partnership, including holding the 2026 International Joint Symposium in Sendai, Japan. This decision reflects the two universities’ commitment to co-organizing the event annually, hosted in turn by each university.

This year’s Joint Symposium also reaffirmed TMU’s role as a hub for global medical research and education. Through sustained partnerships and research networks, TMU continues to build bridges between Taiwan and leading institutions worldwide, advancing knowledge exchange and contributing to solutions that address both local and global health needs.
