Sleep and Physical Activity in Older Adults

Organizer: Dr. Hsiao-Yean Chiu

This aim of program is to provide the students with interests in geriatric sleep and physical activity.

Age-related physiological changes can profoundly affect sleep due to changes in sleep homeostasis, the circadian pacemaker, and endogenous melatonin secretion. Therefore, approximately half of older adults experience sleep disturbances. Older adults also commonly face declines in mobility and functional ability with advanced age; therefore, many older adults live a sedentary lifestyle. Notably, good sleep quality is an important contributor to a physically active lifestyle among older adults. Students working on this project will get to understand the underlying mechanism of sleep changes, examine the interaction between sleep and physical activity, and additional health-related application.

The students will undergo training in laboratory safety. Additional training in secondary data analysis and presentation skills are also included.
