Taipei Medical University (TMU) is advancing its European engagement through high-level academic visits in March 2026, strengthening collaboration in research, education, and clinical innovation.

The initiative follows TMU President Mai-Szu Wu’s featured speech at the Hospital C-Suite Summit in Madrid on March 16, where he talked about “AI Applications in Clinical Practice: Insights from TMU Health System,” showcasing TMU’s leadership in digital healthcare innovation.

Building on this momentum, President Wu led a delegation to France and Belgium from March 18 to 19, engaging top research institutes, universities, and medical centers to expand research collaboration, academic exchange, and talent development.

In Paris, the delegation visited the Institut Pasteur, a globally influential biomedical research institution, where they met leading experts in immunology, virology, and computational biology. The visit was hosted by Professor Gerald Spaeth and brought together researchers including Jean-Michel Molina, Laurent Essioux, and Etienne Simon-Lorière. Discussions focused on vaccine development and immunology, with both sides identifying opportunities for joint research, co-supervision of graduate students, and expanded academic mobility.

The delegation also visited Hôpital Cochin and met with Dr. Liem Binh Luong of Université Paris Cité, to explore collaborations in vaccine research and clinical trials.

At the University of Lille, a key partner since 2015, discussions reinforced collaboration in student exchange, joint laboratories, and dual-degree programs. In 2026, cooperation is further strengthened through the Erasmus+ KA171 program supporting faculty and student mobility. TMU also contributes as an Associated Partner in the five-year Erasmus Mundus S-DISCO project, alongside the University of Lille, Ghent University, the Medical University of Gdansk, and the University of Groningen.

During the meeting, President Wu shared TMU’s TAIP-X initiative. Both sides explored expanded collaboration in neuroscience research, as well as student exchange and shared teaching resources. The delegation also visited the Faculty of Pharmacy and the affiliated University Hospital of Lille.

TMU Expands European Partnerships

The visit concluded in Brussels at the De Duve Institute at Université catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain), where both institutions renewed their Memorandum of Understanding, expanding a partnership established in 2016. Discussions focused on advancing research collaboration and expanding student mobility.

Through this strategic European engagement, TMU not only demonstrated its progress in smart healthcare and clinical innovation but also reinforced partnerships with leading academic and medical institutions across Europe. The University remains committed to advancing interdisciplinary research, cultivating global talent, and integrating clinical practice with education, thereby strengthening Taiwan’s role in the global biomedical and medical education landscape.
