Since 2022, Wanfang Hospital has partnered with Somaliland’s Hargeisa Group Hospital (HGH) on a five-year initiatives to strengthen critical care services.
In September 2024, a medical team led by Dr. Chih-Hsin Lee and Dr. Hsiao-Yueh Chen collaborated with Dr. Ji-Feng Hsu, a resident physician at HGH, to improve intensive care unit (ICU) capabilities, focusing particularly on respiratory failure management, which brought significant advancements to the local healthcare system.
HGH, the largest public hospital in Somaliland, faces challenges such as outdated ventilators and limited resources. The Wanfang team conducted daily rounds, shared introduced respiratory care techniques, and provided hands-on training in areas like central venous catheter care, hemodynamic monitoring. Additionally, they provided training in chest X-ray interpretation and ultrasound-guided procedures, equipping local staff with essential diagnostic skills.
By the end of 2025, Wanfang aims to establish a professional team at HGH capable of independently operating non-invasive ventilators. This collaboration has not only strengthened local healthcare but also highlighted Taiwan’s dedication to advancing global health and addressing health inequalities worldwide.
Wanfang hospital expresses gratitude to the Taiwan Representative Office in Somaliland for its support in facilitating this international medical partnership.

Dr. Chih-Hsin Lee integrates theoretical knowledge of medical care with clinical practice, enabling local physicians to gain a deeper understanding of critical care.
