Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacoepidemiology International Internship Training Program

Program organizer: Shawn Hsiang-Yin Chen, M.S., Pharm.D.

Shawn Chen received a bachelor degree in Pharmacy from Taipei Medical University (TMU) and became licensed pharmacist in Taiwan. She then completed her M.S and Pharm.D. training from University of Iowa. Dr. Chen has served as the Pharmacy Director, Wanfang Medical Center for 12 years and the Associate Dean, TMU Office of Global Engagement for 4 years. She is now a Professor and Associate Dean for education, TMU College of Pharmacy.

Dr. Chen’s current research is directed toward optimizing the medication use and pharmacy service in clinical settings. To best use of medications, her research team has been studying on the pharmacogenomics and pharmacovigilance for adverse drug reaction. Using statistical and machine learning methods and adding genetic and non-genetic risk factors to predict cisplatin- or carboplatin-induced nephrotoxicity in lung cancer patients and anti-tuberculosis agents-induced hepatitis are the major works in the lab. To develop the best pharmacy service, the team published many articles on pediatric medication errors prevention, formulary management and cost containment, medication reconciliation, human resource development, pharmacy informatics, and clinical pharmacy service projects for documenting the value of pharmacists. Recent work involves more research on analyzing the prescribing patterns and outcomes for opioids by National Health Insurance Research Database. This research team welcomes international students and scholars to join and collaborate, discovering the facts and developing strategies for rational use of medications.
