TMU in Higher Education Events
Introduction
Taipei Medical University (TMU) has been an active participant in a range of international higher education events. In addition to attendance to major conferences, TMU frequently joins the country pavilion organised by FICHET, the national desk that promotes Studying in Taiwan, to showcase TMU’s teaching and research excellence so as to attract partners for collaboration.
While the competition intensifies in international higher education, it has become imperative that higher education institutions (HEIs) act with a strategic plan in managing its international participation. TMU, in responding to the increasingly diversified environment for academic exchanges and collaboration, is inspired to enhance its current presence in the international arena through a targeted approach so as to a) efficiently maintain its existing portfolio in international collaboration and b) effectively expand its footprint to uncharted areas that are worthwhile exploring/investing.
With a goal to activate and reinforce the internationalization of higher education in the Asia-Pacific region, APAIE was established by a Founding Committee consisting of university representatives from thirteen countries/territories in the Asia Pacific in 2004. APAIE annual conference is hosted in rotation by HEIs in the Asia Pacific region. Its Secretary Office is currently hosted by Korea University in Seoul, Korea, which has a strong influence on the organization of APAIE’s annual conference.
APAIE 2017 took place in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, which attracted more than 1,400 participants from over 45 countries. Topics explored in the conferences are usually with a practical angle to help audiences develop approaches to best practice. Quality of sessions is generally on a par with industrial standards and the delegates are varied from Deans of International Affairs to junior administrators in International Education. NAFSA: Association of International Educators was initially founded in 1948 to promote the professional development of higher education practitioners dealing with international students. It is now the world’s largest non-profit association dedicated to international education and exchange. Its 10,000 members from over 150 countries are located at more than 3,500 institutions worldwide.
With a Washington-based office housing a fairly sizeable team of professionals, NAFSA has developed a tradition of organizing high-quality annual conference with stimulating sessions, diverse networking opportunities, and massive exhibitions that accommodate wide-ranging business interests. Financial implications of attending NAFSA events are on the higher side compared with the other two, as many of its activities are excluded from the standard delegation pass. The excessively large size of delegates also brings challenges to effectively managing one’s presence on site, though it also provides a valuable reference to higher education practitioners in professional development.
