WHY US

The Graduate Institute of Humanities in Medicine (GIHM) brings together faculty from diverse backgrounds and research fields to pursue a common mission to critically investigate a wide range of issues at the multiple interfaces between health, wellbeing, and society. Our internationally focused faculty conducts research that spans the fields of medical sociology, ecological medicine and community care, occupational health psychology, and science and technology studies.

COURSES INTRODUCTION

The GIHM program gives students a holistic understanding of the relationships between individuals and technologies, communities and their environments, healthcare professionals, and patients and different cultural understanding of and practices pertaining to health, medicine, and the body. Required courses cover diverse topics in social medicine, science and technology studies, ecology and community health, humanity and society, and methodology and research ethics. Elective courses, such as medical anthropology, gender and body studies, and nutrition and culture allow students to dig deeper into areas of interest as they develop ideas for their thesis.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

33 including 26 required and 6 elective credits. In addition to the required courses, you need to take at least 3 electives (6 credits in total) from a wide range of courses offered at TMU.

FUTURE CAREER PATH

Graduates leave GIHM equipped to bridge the gap between the social sciences, humanities, and medicine. Having learned key critical thinking, theoretical, and analytical skills, as well as how to design and carry out innovative and multidisciplinary research projects, our students are prepared to promote health within their own communities through careers in a variety of fields including public policy, medical practice, healthcare management, international development planning, and research.
