In April 2023, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences of Taipei Medical University (TMU) hosted the 2023 Soil and Ecological Balance Seminar with the honor to invite Vincent Goossaert from École Pratique des Hautes Études, Johan Rols from The Needham Research Institute, and Fellow Shu-Min Huang from the Academia Sinica’s Institute of Ethnology to attend.

The seminar was hosted by TMU in collaboration with Ruifang Qingyun Temple and the Foundation of Chinese Dietary Culture. The seminar included fruitful topics; for instance, soil and religion, textiles, biology, local ecology, introducing 23 journals in the eight sessions that attracted more than 200 experts and professionals from France, England, Japan, and Taiwan’s higher educational institutions.

Mai-Szu Wu, the Vice President of the TMU, stated that the relationship between medicine and soil seemed weak; however, the soil was deeply connected to human life which indirectly influenced people’s health. As a result, it was meaningful for TMU, a professional medical university that was determined to care for the public’s health, to organize this seminar this year. The included topics in the seminar unveiled the core concept that healthy soil is one of the essential factors for humans to live healthy lives. In the end, Wu hoped that this meaningful seminar could strengthen the exchanges and collaborations between TMU and international and cross-field academics to create a sustainable and healthy future together.
