Shuang Ho Hospital Earns ISO 14064-1 Certification for Greenhouse Gas Inventory

In alignment with the Taiwan’s 2050 net-zero emissions goal, Taipei Medical University Shuang Ho Hospital (TMU Shuang Ho Hospital) proactively pursued a net-zero plan and successfully earned the international ISO 14064-1 certificate from the International Organization for Standardization Greenhouse Gas inventory in May 2023.

According to the ISO Certification report, TMU Shuang Ho Hospital emitted 17,713.09 tons of greenhouse gas in 2022, and 87.12 percent of the emission attributed to electricity. Yih-Giun Cherng, the superintendent of TMU Shuang Ho Hospital, emphasized that while a hospital’s mission is to save lives, it’s equally important to strive for minimizing greenhouse emissions. This reduction contributes to mitigating the impact of global warming in the face of changing and extreme climates.

TMU Shuang Ho Hospital’s entire infrastructure has been designed with a green building approach, undergoing an active transition to energy-efficient equipment and the incorporation of renewable energy sources. The hospital’s administrative offices are all powered by solar energy and use energy-saving lighting. Moreover, 97 percent of the hospital’s operations have transitioned to digital platforms, resulting in a reduction of paper usage by approximately 18 million pieces – equivalent to saving 6043 mature trees. The hospital’s strong commitment to green procurement, by importing Taiwan Environmental Protection Administration-approved products, has earned it government recognition for six consecutive years.

TMU Shuang Ho Hospital’s next step toward achieving net zero is to develop a carbon reduction plan based on a scientific foundation by adopting low-carbon and renewable products. Moving forward, TMU Shuang Ho Hospital will persist in its philosophy and remain committed to reaching its net-zero hospital target.
