Prevention is Our Passion— Cheng-Yu Chen , Distinguished Professor from TMU, Wins 2023 NSTC Outstanding Research Award

In 2024, Cheng-Yu Chen, a distinguished professor at Taipei Medical University (TMU), has been awarded the 2023 NSTC (National Science and Technology Council) Outstanding Research Award.


Published more than 10 essays with IF greater than 10, Chen’s academic achievements are recognized and made him appointed as a former executive vice president of TMU.

Utilizing AI technology, Chen and his research team have been dedicated to several research fields, including brain cancer, stroke, traumatic brain injury, dementia, and lung cancer, for more than 10 years. With groundbreaking research outcomes, Chen has applied for almost 20 patents and established a startup, DeepRad. AI, in August last year. Chen’s innovative research has also won him the National Innovation Awards for seven times. Chen’s academic achievements led to his appointment as an honorary member of the American Society of Neuroradiology in 2024.

One of Chen’s latest innovative inventions is Deep Lung Nodule Detection, equipped with systems to calculate coronary artery calcium scores (CAC) and bone mineral density (BMD). With a single computed tomography image, Deep Lung Nodule Detection is able to detect multiple medical conditions such as lung cancer, emphysema, coronary artery calcification, or osteoporosis, with a precision of up to 90%. Moreover, it would auto-generate health reports that meet the international standard, which can shorten the time for doctors to diagnose from 15 minutes to 2 minutes and greatly reduce patients’ exposure to radiation dosage.

From big data to AI and precision medicine, Chen demonstrates his determination to transform his and his team’s research outcomes into business models, benefiting medical institutions worldwide and making a small but sincere impact on society.
